MOVING on from Trauma: The Effectiveness of Aerobic Exercise in the Treatment of PTSD

What is the study about?

We are studying potentially traumatic experiences and treatment interventions that may help individuals heal from those experiences. By participating in this research study, you will help contribute to the understanding of the recovery process from traumatic experiences and receive a treatment intervention that may improve the recovery process from trauma. Our study goal is to improve the effectiveness of trauma processing interventions.

If you decide to participate:

You will be invited to six sessions at the trauma research lab at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, where we will ask you to engage in a trauma treatment intervention involving exercise, writing, or both. You will also be asked to complete some online surveys. Each session may take approximately 1-3 hours. We are looking for a person who:

a) Has experienced at least one potentially traumatic event in their lifetime,

b) is over 18 years old,

c) Has three or these four symptoms in life:

1. Nightmares about a traumatic event or thought about it when you did not want to.

2. Tried not to think about a traumatic event or went out of your way to avoid situations that

remind you of it.

3. Were consistently on guard, watchful, or easily startled.

4. Felt numb or detached from others, activities, or your surroundings.

This study excludes people who have any musculoskeletal injury, any rheumatic disease, epilepsy or any seizure disorder, history of heart disease or lung disease, high blood pressure, a traumatic brain injury within 6-months of the study, any neurological condition affecting the ability to exercise, and any other medical condition that may affect the ability to exercise safely.

What do you get in return?

You will receive $25 in cash at your first laboratory assessment session and $25 in cash at your final laboratory assessment session for a total of $50 in cash. Additionally, you will be entered into a drawing for one of four $50 Amazon gift cards if you complete ALL sections of the study. UCCS student will have the option to receive cash compensation or up to 6 SONA credits. You will receive a trauma intervention that may decrease the distressing experience of trauma symptoms.
